Extended Hours During an Extreme Heat Alert

Keeping cool in Toronto's outdoor pools is a great way to enjoy the summer heat. Some outdoor pools extend their hours until 11:45 pm during Extreme Heat Alerts with low probability of precipitation. When the extended hour program is in effect, the website will be updated by midday on the day of the Extreme Heat Alert. See the list below to find out which pools have extended hours.

What is a Heat Alert?

From May 15 to September 30 of each year, Toronto Public Health staff monitors the Heat Health Alert System to determine when the Medical Officer of Health should declare a Heat or Extreme Heat Alert. Using spatial synoptic classification, the Heat Health Alert System compares forecast data to historical meteorological conditions which have in the past, lead to increased mortality in Toronto.

Forecast data includes weather conditions such as temperature, dew point, humidity, cloud cover, wind speed and direction. The system also considers when in the summer season offensive conditions are present and the number of consecutive days oppressive conditions occurred.

A Heat Alert is issued when an oppressive air mass is forecast and the likelihood of excess weather-related mortality exceeds 65% and an Extreme Heat Alert when the likelihood of excess weather related mortality exceeds 90%.
