On Tuesday, January 17, 2006, Toronto and East York Community Council considered a proposal for comprehensive redevelopment of the lands within the block bounded by Broadview Avenue, Gerrard Street East, Riverdale Park and the Don Valley Parkway (excluding the Riverdale Library).
The proposal allows for the integration of this block back into the neighbourhood with a mix of permitted uses, realignment of the existing Don Jail Roadway, relocation of the City park and guidelines to regulate the height and form of future buildings. Redevelopment would involve construction of a new hospital building with accessory uses and integration of the historic Don Jail building, demolition of the existing building occupied by Bridgepoint Health (formerly known as Riverdale Hospital) and the creation of 4 independent development parcels. Included in the proposal are City of Toronto lands used for park purposes or leased to Bridgepoint Health. A proposed land exchange would result in a new City park south of the historic Don Jail building and would include the historic Governor's House and Gatekeeper's House, relocation of the historic St. Matthew's Lawn Bowling Clubhouse and realignment of the Don Jail Roadway.
As the proposal would require changes to the former City of Toronto Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw, as well as the City's new Official Plan, the Toronto and East York Community Council will review it, together with a draft plan of subdivision and any other related material. The Community Council will then make recommendations for consideration by Toronto City Council.
