"Black History Month"
February 2000
| WHEREAS: |
a wide variety of institutions and levels of government celebrate February as Black History Month. Toronto City Council affirms and is committed to the belief that the racial and ethno-cultural diversity of its communities is a source economic, social, political and cultural enrichment and strength; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
the people of Toronto have been in the forefront of efforts to eliminate barriers to equality for all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender, identity, age, marital status, family status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, disability or level of literacy; and

| WHEREAS: |
it is the aim of Toronto City Council to eliminate racial discrimination in every form and to strive for racial equality for all people; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
members of the Black community have made significant contributions in the areas of education, medicine, art, culture, public service, finance, politics, human rights and anti-racism. Black History Month provides an opportunity for the contributions of people of African descent in Canada to be showcased and shared.

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the more than 2.3 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim February 2000 as "Black History Month" in the City of Toronto.
