"Martin Luther King Jr. Day"
January 17, 2000
| WHEREAS: |
the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. played a significant role in combating racial discrimination and creating social change towards an inclusive society in the United States through his vision, courage and peaceful campaigns; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council is committed to the elimination of racism and all forms of discrimination, as well as barriers to access and participation, and the development and nurturing of a just, equitable and inclusive society for all people; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. exemplified the values and principles embraced by Toronto City Council, and in communities across North America celebrations are held to honour his memory and legacy which has inspired the pursuit of equality by people around the world; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto's vibrant society is enriched by the cultural diversity of its people who have the inalienable right to participate fully and equally in the life of the City regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, martial status, family status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, disability or level of literacy, and to life at all times with dignity, respect and peace.

I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the more than 2.3 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim January 17, 2000 as "Martin Luther King Jr. Day" in the City of Toronto.
