"Messenger Appreciation Day"
October 9, 2002
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto's more than fifty (bike) courier companies employ over 500 bike messengers who make an estimated 1.2 million deliveries in our city each year, which results in 2,500 fewer cars in the downtown core every day; and |
| WHEREAS: |
there are many benefits to bicycle couriers among them is a solution to the growing problems of pollution, congestion, gridlock and a reduction in emissions that contribute to smog and global warming. and |
| WHEREAS: |
bicycle couriers not only promote year-round cycling, they are goodwill ambassadors for our City, aid charities such as St. Stephen's House through the annual "Courier Classic" fundraising event, and provide a value added service to firms seeking ways to reduce costs and improve efficiency; and |
| WHEREAS: |
bicycle couriers are looked upon as fole models who colour the urban environment and have developed their own cultural identity. They draw tourists and bring international attention to Toronto through events and races such as the Cycle Messenger World Championships, Human Powered Rollercoaster and North American Cycle Courier Championships. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2002 as "Messenger Appreciation Day" to congratulate couriers and courier companies who promote professionalism and safety and contribute to the well-being of our community every day. |
