"50th Anniversary of the Greatest Jazz Concert Ever"

May 15, 2003

WHEREAS: May 15, 2003 is the 50th anniversary of the legendary Jazz Concert held in Toronto at Massey Hall on May 15, 1953; and
WHEREAS: the event, organized by the New Jazz Society of Toronto, was the first and only time five of the most creative and influential jazz musicians in the world were brought together to perform; and
WHEREAS: the concert by the Quintet of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus and Max Roach became known as the "greatest jazz concert ever. It is regarded as a seminal moment in the history of jazz and a significant highlight in the cultural life of our City; and
WHEREAS: this special occasion provides an opportunity to extend our appreciation and acknowledge the contributions made by the Quintet, the members of the New Jazz Society of Toronto and the musicians of the CBC All-Stars.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2003 as the "50th Anniversary of the Greatest Jazz Concert Ever" to recognize and celebrate the importance of this musical event in the life of Toronto, and encourage everyone to enjoy and support jazz music in our City.
