"AIDS Walk Toronto Day"
September 21, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
this year marks the 14th annual AIDS Walk Toronto, the largest AIDS Walk in Canada and one of Toronto's premier fundraising events. It brings together thousands of people of all ages, from different backgrounds and walks of life for a day of fun and festivities while raising funds to benefit the AIDS Committee of Toronto and its partner agencies; and |
| WHEREAS: |
in 2002, an estimated 15,000 people participated in the Walk raising over $500,000. Since its inception in 1989 nearly $7.5 million has been raised to provide essential services and programs to people in our community infected and affected by AIDS; and |
| WHEREAS: |
this tremendous and much-anticipated event is an opportunity to increase public awareness and knowledge about HIV and AIDS and the important work carried out by the AIDS Committee of Toronto, its partner agencies and volunteers; and |
| WHEREAS: |
AIDS Walk Toronto demonstrates the compassion and heart of the people our great City, corporate sponsors, walkers and everyone who participates in this event to help make a positive difference in the fight against AIDS and in the lives of individuals and families affected by this disease. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim September 21, 2003 as "AIDS Walk Toronto Day" to recognize the important work of the AIDS Committee of Toronto and its partner agencies, and encourage everyone to participate in this celebration of community spirit and make this the most successful Walk to date. |
