|
"Armenian Memorial Day"
April 24, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
Canadian-Armenian communities across Canada will commemorate the 88th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, a tragic event that marked the spectre of genocide in the 20th century; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the execution of the Armenian population in Turkey claimed 1.5 million lives and culminated in one of the most brutal crimes in history; and |
| WHEREAS: |
by recognizing this devastating time in history, we are provided with an opportunity to understand and appreciate the values that Canadians deeply treasure - peace, freedom and democracy; and |
| WHEREAS: |
it is imperative that we honour the memory of the men, women and children who died by avoiding at all costs, the repetition of the failings of past centuries. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim April 24, 2003 as "Armenian Memorial Day" in the City of Toronto. |
[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
