"Bastille Day"
July 14, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
July 14, 2003, marks the celebration of Bastille Day; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Bastille Day represents one of the most significant days in the development of the democratic values of freedom and equality that are consistent themes for modern democratic states; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the histories of Canada and France are inextricably linked and we are two nations that have always stood together as friends; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the motion by Benjamin Raspail of the Sein District in France in 1880 to have July 14th recognized as a national holiday called upon all to recognize the significance of this day to the development of democratic rights that both Canada and France continue to share; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the people to Toronto, Canada and the people of France continue to hold each other in the highest regard. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim July 14, 2003 as "Bastille Day" in Toronto, and that the City raise the flag of the Republic of France over Toronto City Hall as a gesture of respect, friendship and warmth. |
