"Becel Ride for Heart Day"

June 1, 2003

WHEREAS: heart disease and stroke remain the # 1 killer in Canada and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) plays a leadership role in research and the study and prevention of this disease; and
WHEREAS: cardiovascular disease and stroke are serious health concerns that cost billions of dollars in treatment expenses and lost productivity each year; and
WHEREAS: in 1998, HSFC raised over $41 million for heart and stroke research and through diagnostic techniques, medical treatments and surgical advances, helps save more lives every year; and
WHEREAS: promotion and support of physical fitness, proper nutrition and exercise will help ensure that everyone in our community is heart healthy.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 1, 2003 as "Becel Ride for Heart Day" in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to take out your two-wheeler and pump up the heart in a bike ride to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
