"Bike Week"
May 26 - June 8, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto is committed to a bicycle-friendly future for the City's 939,000 cyclists, and to that end has installed over 10,000 post and ring bicycle racks with plans for the installation of an additional 2,000 racks during each year of the Bike Plan's implementation; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto offers its cyclists over 153 kilometres of beautiful bike paths and more than 80 kilometres of on street bike lanes and routes, and while cycling is a fun and healthy pastime, it is also an efficient and environmentally friendly means of transportation; and |
| WHEREAS: |
since 1988, Bike Week has been celebrated by the many people in our great City who cycle to work or school, or just for pleasure; and |
| WHEREAS: |
more than 50 community partners have "pedaled their influence" during Bike Week 2003 to present over 100 cycling-related events through Toronto to help Make Every Week Bike Week; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto recognizes the need for clean, cost-effective transportation and supports the Toronto Cycling Committee in its endeavours. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 26 - June 8, 2003 as "Bike Week" and encourage everyone to get outside and ride. |
