"Bob Marley Day"

February 6, 2003

WHEREAS: the legendary Bob Marley earned his place in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame with the distinctive reggae beat of his music; and
WHEREAS: many of the lyrics in Bob Marley's songs contain poignant messages of peace and harmony, and he continues to be a role model and an inspiration to people around the world; and
WHEREAS: Bob Marley took a personal stand against violence and helped to end political strife and bloodshed in his native Jamaica. He was honoured with a gold medal by the United Nations for his humanitarian efforts in promoting world peace.
WHEREAS: Bob Marley was also awarded The Order of Merit, Jamaica's third highest honour, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country's culture.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim February 6, 2003 as "Bob Marley Day" in the City of Toronto to salute a great humanitarian and celebrate his music.
