"Brain Injury Month"

June 2003

WHEREAS: in Ontario, over 18,000 individuals are permanently disabled as a result of a brain injury each year that can occur from motor vehicle collisions, infections, falls, bicycles accidents, drug abuse and heart attacks; and
WHEREAS: it is estimated that the annual direct and indirect costs associated with traumatic brain injury are $1 billion in Ontario; and
WHEREAS: over the past few years, various events have been organized to raise community awareness about the effects of brain injury.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 2003 as "Brain Injury Awareness Month" in the City of Toronto.
