"Canadian Forces Day"

June 1, 2003

WHEREAS: we recognize the tremendous contribution made by Canadian Forces at home and abroad, in such areas as the defence of Canada, our NATO commitments, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, search and rescue, peacekeeping missions and the international war against terrorism; and
WHEREAS: our military personnel put their lives on the line for our country and its people, both at home and overseas, and it is their dedication and courage that make a real difference to our lives and the lives of countless others; and
WHEREAS: today thousands of personnel are deployed in many different missions, some high profile others less so, but each equally important, and we owe our deepest gratitude and respect to the brave men and women who serve in the Canadian Forces; and
WHEREAS: Canadian Forces have served in the great conflicts of the last century from World War I to the war against terrorism. These brave men and women remain determined to protect our values and way of life, with many of them making the ultimate sacrifice.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 1, 2003 as "Canadian Forces Day" in the City of Toronto to recognize the courageous members of the Canadian Forces who have made remarkable sacrifices in the building of our nation and continue to contribute to peace and security both at home and around the world.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
