"Caribana Festival Weeks"

July 18 - August 4, 2003

WHEREAS: Caribana means it's festival time in Toronto. This extravagant event is a vibrant and joyful celebration and a highlight of the summer season that attracts thousands of visitors to our great City; and
WHEREAS: as the largest event of its kind in North America, this extraordinary cultural celebration recreates the lively and captivating spirit of the Caribbean culture and traditions that are such an important part of our community; and
WHEREAS: the highlight of the festival is the spectacular Parade, when the streets come alive with dazzling costumed bands and live Calypso, Steelpan, Soca, Reggae and Samba music, dance, arts and crafts, fashion and food.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim July 18 - August 4, 2003 as "Caribana Festival Weeks" and encourage everyone in our large and diverse community to be a part of this exciting celebration. I congratulate the Caribbean Cultural Committee and everyone involved for your hard work in making the special event such a success.
