"Casey House Hospice Week"
March 1 - 8, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
Casey House Hospice opened its doors on March 1, 1988 as an organization unique in Canada - a freestanding hospice committed to providing exceptional palliative and supportive care for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, their families and friends; and |

at that time, AIDS was a new and devastating condition, shrouded in fear and ignorance and people living with this illness often died stigmatized, alone and in great pain; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Casey House Hospice rose to this challenge by leading the way to AIDS palliative care in Canada. During the past 15 years it has been giving compassion a home, and thousands of people have benefited from Casey House's ethic of care, both in its residence and in the community; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the Hospice has become world renowned for its innovation and expertise in HIV/AIDS palliative and supportive care, and as an exceptional model of holistic, client-centred, collaborative care. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim March 1 - 8, 2003 as as "Casey House Hospice Week" to recognize the exceptional staff and volunteers who provide such tremendous palliative and supportive care. I am proud that Toronto is home to such a fine institution. |
