City of Toronto Proclamation |
 |
| |
|
"Community Safety Night"
September 16, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
on Wednesday, September 16, 2003, the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children, with the support of the City of Toronto's Task Force on Community Safety, will be hosting a Greater Toronto Area wide anti-violence event called the "4th annual Community Safety Night"; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Community Safety Night is based on the premise that once communities are made safer for women, who feel most vulnerable to public violence, they will be safer for everyone; and |
| WHEREAS: |
in its 1999 report, Toronto's Task Force on Community Safety recommended that Safety Audits be conducted in every Greater Toronto Area neighbourhood. Community Safety Night provides Toronto community members with the opportunity to join with others to evaluate the safety of their neighbourhoods using METRAC's Safety Audit Kit; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Safety Audits recognize that people experience violence differently based on identity, which includes characteristics like ethnicity, race, age, language, income level, gender, sexuality and physical ability. They also understand that discrimination, stereotypes and negative biases against certain groups of people are also forms of violence; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Community Safety Night will help to encourage Toronto's diverse community members to voice their unique violence concerns. Once community groups have completed their evaluations, they will be sent to the City of Toronto Safety Audit Response System, a database used to manage safety audit information and to ensure that community safety concerns are directed to the appropriate City departments, agencies, Boards and Commissions for follow-up. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim September 16, 2003 as "Community Safety Night" and encourage all residents and City Councillors to participate in this important community anti-violence event. |
[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
