Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a fatal, inherited disease causing severe respiratory and digestive problems; and
WHEREAS:
despite the aggressive treatment children and adults with CF must undergo, lung infection and its complications eventually claim their lives; and
WHEREAS:
advances in research and medical awareness now enable many children to survive into adulthood. Today, in Canada, the average age of survival is about 35 years; and
WHEREAS:
the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation sponsors extensive research and treatment programs across Canada. These efforts provide care while pursuing a cure or control for this disease.
NOW,
THEREFORE:
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 2003 as "Cystic Fibrosis Month" in the City of Toronto. I commend the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for its hard work and commitment, and encourage all residents to support this year's fundraising campaign for a very worthwhile cause.
