"Diabetes Month"

"Diabetes Day"

November 14, 2003

WHEREAS: diabetes is a serious condition that affects more than two million Canadians and is a leading cause of death by disease; and
WHEREAS: there is a great need to research better methods of diabetes prevention, treatment and ultimately a cure; and
WHEREAS: this year, the Canadian Diabetes Association is marking 50 years of improving the quality of life for people affected by this disease through diabetes research, education, service and advocacy.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim November 2003 as "Diabetes Month" to increase awareness of this disease and November 14, 2003 as "Diabetes Day" in honour of one of Canada's heroes Sir Frederick Banting who together with this colleague at the University of Toronto Dr. Charles Best, discovered insulin.
