"Don Watershed Day"

September 14, 2003

WHEREAS: the Don Watershed Regeneration Council and Toronto and Region Conservation are holding a "10 years On the Don" event on Sunday, September 14, 2003 in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the formation of the Don Watershed Task Force and the Don Watershed Regeneration Council; and
WHEREAS: over the years, individuals, communities, governments and businesses have worked together for the health of the Don and their own communities. The Don Council has helped raise awareness of the Don and its problems and continues to participate in regeneration projects and act on isues affecting the health of the watershed; and
WHEREAS: the Don River flows from the Oak Ridges Moraine through the heart of the Greater Toronto Area and is an integral part of the daily lives of more than 800,000 people. The health of the Don Watershed is inextricably linked with the health of our community and our Living City; and
WHEREAS: this watershed is more than just a river, it is our home, and home to a wide array of wildlife. Its value is the sum of all parts - trees, buildings, water and animals, and it must continue to grow as we move towards a healthier and more vital Don.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim September 14, 2003 as "Don Watershed Day" to recognize and thank all the people who have drawn attention to the ongoing work that needs to be done if we are to continue the regeneration of the watershed and the formation of sustainable communities.
