"Down Syndrome Awareness Week"
November 1 - 7, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder resulting in an extra 21st chromosome that causes delays and limitations in physical and intellectual development. The incidence of Down syndrome in the general population is one in every 700 births and is not related to race, religion or socio-economic status; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the Down Syndrome Association of Toronto is a charitable, non-profit organization that was created by parents in March 1985. It provides a social and information network by publishing a newsletter, distributing information kits and handling media relations; and |
| WHEREAS: |
there is a wide variation in mental abilities, behaviour and physical development in people with Down syndrome. The Association pursues civil and human rights, equality of opportunity and the full integration of persons with Down syndrome; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the Down Syndrome Association of Toronto supports the Canadian Down Syndrome Network, an organization of chapters across the country that deals with issues concerning education, employment and independent living. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim November 1 - 7, 2003 as "Down Syndrome Awareness Week" in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to participate in the special events the Association has planned to raise awareness and increase understanding of people with Down syndrome. |
