"Fanconi Anemia Awareness Day"

May 25, 2003

WHEREAS: Fanconi anemia (FA) is a potentially fatal, inherited disease found in all ethnic groups which leads to bone marrow failure and cancers, and is often associated with congenital anomalies; and
WHEREAS: there is no cure for FA and the only effective treatment for its haematological symptoms is an extremely risky bone marrow transplant; and
WHEREAS: research into FA has not only enabled many children with this disease to survive into adulthood and improved the outlook for adults diagnosed with FA, but has also increased our understanding of DNA repair, leukemia, other cancers and birth defects; and
WHEREAS: the Canadian Fanconi Anemia Research Fund provides support to affected families, and funds advanced medical research towards finding a cure for FA, including at the Hospital for Sick Children.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 25, 2003 as "Fanconi Anemia Awareness Day" in the City of Toronto. I commend the Canadian Fanconi Anemia Research Fund for its hard work and commitment, and encourage all residents to support this very worthwhile cause.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
