hepatitis C is a blood infection that is transmitted by blood and blood products and can lead to liver failure and other severe health problems; and
WHEREAS:
hepatitis C is a treatable illness that affects thousands of residents in the City of Toronto; and
WHEREAS:
early detection, education and awareness can reduce harm to those already infected with hepatitis C and prevent the spread to others at risk.
NOW,
THEREFORE:
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2003 as "Hepatitis C Awareness Day" in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to increase their awareness of this illness that affects the lives of individuals and their families.
