 "International Day of Disabled Persons"
December 3, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
in 1992 the United Nations proclaimed December 3 as the "International Day of Disabled Persons", to reinforce the commitment to improve the integration of persons with disabilities who are often forced into poverty, unemployment and social isolation; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto, in collaboration with organizations of people with disabilities and the private sector, is committed to ensuring that persons with disabilities can exercise their civil, political, social and cultural rights on an equal basis with other people; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace; and |
| WHEREAS: |
on September 22, 2003, Toronto City Council adopted the City's Accessibility Plan, under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, a framework for action which supports and strengthens the City's commitment and efforts to enhance accessibility to its programs, services, employment and facilities; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy, language and/or socio-economic status. |

I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim December 3, 2003 as "International Day of Disabled Persons". |
