this month recognizes the significant contributions our Irish community has made to the growth, prosperity and success of our great City; and
WHEREAS:
it is the courage and determination of people of Irish descent who immigrated to Canada and other countries that is a success story worth celebrating. Nowhere is this more evident than in Toronto where over half a million residents of Irish heritage make their home; and
WHEREAS:
each March, the Irish community celebrates its rich culture and traditions with a month-long calendar of events including the St. Patrick's Day Parade which is enjoyed by thousands of people of all ages and from all walks of life, and the Grand Marshall's Ball.
NOW,
THEREFORE:
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim March 2003 as "Irish Heritage and Cultural Appreciation Month" to recognize the contribution made by our large and vibrant Irish community
