"Louis Riel Day"
November 16, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
the Metis Nation are recognized in the Constitution Act 1982 as one of Canada's Aboriginal people with a homeland across Canada; and |
| WHEREAS: |
to the Metis people, Louis Riel was a great humanitarian, elder and leader; and |
| WHEREAS: |
November 16th is recognized as "Louis Riel Day" by the Metis Nation who celebrate their national holiday with commemorative ceremonies and events at various locations across Canada, including Toronto City Hall; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital status, family status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences or level of literacy. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim November 16, 2003 as "Louis Riel Day" in the City of Toronto to recognize his contribution to the building of Canada. |
