"National Access Awareness Week"
June 2 - 8, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
over 17% of Toronto's 2.5 million residents have some form of disability, and there is a need for greater awareness, understanding and recognition of their needs, capabilities and potential; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the daily lives of people with disabilities are adversely affected by the barriers that exist in the environment, employment, public transportation, housing, recreation and communication; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are committed to the removal and prevention of barriers in order to facilitate full and meaningful participation of people with disabilities in civic life, and ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy, language and socio-economic status. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 2 - 8, 2003 as "National Access Awareness Week" and encourage everyone to support equal rights for persons with disabilities. |
