"National Ovarian Cancer Month"

September 2003

WHEREAS: ovarian cancer is the most serious gynecological cancer due to the fact that there is no early detection test; and
WHEREAS: over 2,600 women are diagnosed wth ovarian cancer every year - that is, one in 70 women in Canada; and
WHEREAS: over 1,500 Canadian women die each year of this disease largely in part because symptons are often vague and diagnosis is made in the later stage of the disease when a cure is less likely; and
WHEREAS: with early detection and treatment, the survival rate for women suffering this disease could be as high as 90%.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim September 2003 as "National Ovarian Cancer Month".

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
