"Canadian Rivers Day"

June 8, 2003

WHEREAS: fresh water is essential to life on earth and Canada is blessed with more than one-fifth of the world's supply; and
WHEREAS: rivers are vital to our natural environment and cultural heritage and are the lifelines to healthy oceans, forests and communities; and
WHEREAS: the discovery and exploration of Canada was made possible by our rivers, and they are the living threads of history that connect our country and our peoples; and
WHEREAS: rivers have molded our identity, culture and landscape and have done much to make us what we are as Torontonians and Canadians.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 8, 2003 as "Canadian Rivers Day" and encourage everyone to gather at the Humber River Mouth in Sir Casmir Gzowski Park to participate in activities that celebrate the environmental recreational use of our Canadian Heritage River, and commemorate the important part our urban rivers play in our every day lives.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
