"Oral Cancer Awareness Week"

June 23 - 29, 2003

WHEREAS: only about 35 per cent of oral cancers are diagnosed in the early stage when the disease has the highest cure rate and, if caught early, the five-year survival rate is about 80 per cent; and
WHEREAS: while there is no one cause of oral cancer, there are several known risk factors, all of which can be reduced through awareness and prevention, and
WHEREAS: the role of the dentist is instrumental in detecting oral cancer in the early stages, potentially saving lives, and the Ontario Dental Association will raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of early detection of this disfiguring disease; and
WHEREAS: the Ontario Dental Association is kicking off a province-wide campaign in the City of Toronto.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 23 - 29, 2003 as "Oral Cancer Awareness Week".

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
