"Parkinson Awareness Month"

April 2003

WHEREAS: there is no known cause or cure for Parkinson's, the second most common neurodegenerative disorder that affects the lives of many Canadians; and
WHEREAS: drug treatment helps to control some symptoms for a period of time, but the disorder continues to be chronic, progressive and degenerative; and
WHEREAS: the Parkinson Society Canada provides a wide range of services to people affected with this disorder and their families, and offers hope, encouragement and support; and
WHEREAS: the Parkinson Society Canada has planned a variety of educational and entertaining fundraising events during the month including the sale of fresh-cut tulips, their signature flower.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim April 2003 as "Parkinson Awareness Month" in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to support the Parkinson Society Canada in this very cause by participating in some of the educational and exciting events that are planned.
