"Persons Day"

October 18 - 26, 2003

WHEREAS: on October 18, 1929 in what is known as the "Persons Case", the Privy Council in the United Kingdom reversed a decision by the Supreme Court of Canada which held that women were not persons and could not be appointed to the Senate; and
WHEREAS: in 1979, Toronto City Council commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Person's Case, which established the right of women to participate in all aspects of public life, by establishing the Constance E. Hamilton Award named after the first woman elected in 1920 to a municipal council in Toronto; and
WHEREAS: Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to create a compassionate society, and have demonstrated a long commitment to women's equality, and the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace, and support strategies and programs to further economic, political and educational opportunities for women; and
WHEREAS: the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy, language and or socio-economic status.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 18, 2003 as "Persons Day".
