"Plant a Row — Grow a Row Day"

May 10, 2003

WHEREAS: the Plant a Row · Grow a Row program invites all Toronto gardeners to grow an extra row of vegetables and donate the harvest to a local food bank or community food program; and
WHEREAS: this program is a national project that was established by the Canadian Association of Food Banks, The Composting Council of Canada and the Garden Writers Association, and boasts strong partnerships with many Toronto-area organizations; and
WHEREAS: fresh produce is an important part of a healthy diet, but is often beyond the means of many low-income families, who turn to food banks and food programs to help supplement their nutritional intake; and
WHEREAS: gardening is a great activity of interest to people and groups across our City, contributing to their own personal enjoyment and the beauty of our community, while growing and sharing fruits and vegetables helps build healthy and closer communities, and supports the long-standing tradition of gardeners loving to share their harvest with others.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 10, 2003 as "Plant a Row · Grow a Row" in the City of Toronto, and encourage gardeners across the City to take part in this worthwhile program.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
