"Pride Week"
June 23 - 29, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two Spirited and Transsexual Pride Week is one of the largest and most important cultural events in the City, playing an important part in Toronto's economic vitality by bringing in thousands of visitors for the parades and a week of celebration; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto has a strong, vibrant and proud community of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual and Two Spirited people - the third largest in North America - which is an important part of the rich fabric of our diverse City; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy, language and/or socio-economic status; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Pride Week celebrations significantly contribution to reducing discrimination and other barriers faced by this community with respect to employment, housing, public safety, policing, health care and education, among others. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 23 - 29, 2003 as "Pride Week" and encourage everyone to join in this 22nd celebration of achievement and equality. |
