"Reach for the Rainbow Week"
June 8 - 14, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
with the theme "All children belong…All children are equal" Reach for the Rainbow recognizes the critical importance of creating socially inclusive recreational opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities; and |
| WHEREAS: |
social inclusion provides a sense of belonging, teaches acceptance of self and others, offers choices, promotes emotional stability, provides new experiences and creates opportunities to grow socially, emotionally and creatively. It improves self-esteem and presents an opportunity for children and young adults with disabilities to express their uniqueness and share their talents; and |
| WHEREAS: |
making social integration a reality continues to be an on-going and costly struggle. Providing in-take assessments, support workers, training to meet individual needs, the cost of wheelchair accessible transportation and the loan of special equipment can be overwhelming; and |
| WHEREAS: |
recreational opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities, provide much needed respite for parents coping with unusual challenges. Reach for the Rainbow works tirelessly to develop integrated opportunities that enrich the lives of children and young adults with disabilities, their families and their communities. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 8 - 14, 2003 as "Reach for the Rainbow Week" to recognize the importance of social integration and the valuable contribution Reach for the Rainbow and its many partners have made to create a City where "All children belong...All children are equal" |
[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
