"Remembrance Week"

October 31 - November 11, 2003

WHEREAS: more than one and a half million Canadians have served in our armed forces in time of war and as peacekeepers, and many have made the ultimate sacrifice; and
WHEREAS: on November 11th each year, we gather at cenotaphs and memorials in our communities to remember, thank and honour those who fought for peace and freedom on land, in the air and at sea; and
WHEREAS: in remembering those who gave their lives for our country, we commit ourselves to lasting peace at home and around the world, and resolve that the lessons of the past are never repeated; and
WHEREAS: we proudly wear the poppy as a symbol of the real poppies that grow in the final resting place of the many soldiers who died protecting our freedom.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 31 - November 11, 2003 as "Remembrance Week" to honour and thank the veterans who are with us for their bravery and heroism, and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
