"Self-Help Awareness Week"
September 29 - October 4, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
since 1987 the Self-Help Resource Centre has been assisting the community by providing information and referral services to self-help and mutual aid groups with links to centres across Toronto; and |
| WHEREAS: |
these self-help and mutual aid groups are voluntary, peer-led groups of individuals who come together to share common experiences, knowledge or concerns and the opportunity to help themselves and each other; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the Self-Help Resource Centre assists new groups in starting up, provides on-going support to established groups, offers regular workshops, outreach programs, resources and newsletters to promote the goals of the organization and the importance of self-help and mutual aid strategies; and |
| WHEREAS: |
with this year's theme "Families Caring for Each Other" the Self-Help Resource Centre and community partners have scheduled a week of activities about self-help/mutual aid to increase awareness of the services, benefits and support available to people in our large and diverse community. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim September 29 - October 4, 2003 as "Self-Help Awareness Week" in the City of Toronto, and encourage everyone to learn more about the Self-Help Resource Centre and the services it provides. |
