"Social Work Week"
March 3 to 9, 2003
| WHEREAS: |
Social workers are committed to the values of acceptance, self-determination, respect of individuality and strongly believe in the intrinisic worth and dignity of every human being and |
| WHEREAS: |
with the theme "Socal Work: A Unique Profession", social workers in the City of Toronto and across Canada will be celebrating the role and contribution of the profession by hosting a wide variety of events during Social Work Week; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Social workers are trained to practice in many different areas including working directly with individuals, family and group counselling and consulting services, community development, mental health centres, hospitals, child welfare, schools, people with disabilities and services for the elderly; and |
| WHEREAS: |
in the City of Toronto we have over 3,000 dedicated and outstanding social workers who advocate for individual rights, social justice and the need for reform to social policy and social services delivery. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim March 3 to 9, 2003 as "Social Work Week" to recognize the many contributions made by social workers and the programs and services they provide which make a real difference in the quality of life and living conditions for those less fortunate. |
