"Taoist Tai Chi Awareness Day"

September 6, 2003

WHEREAS: Taoist Tai Chi is an 11th century Chinese exercise system that is one of the world's most popular exercises and is practiced by millions of people of all ages; and
WHEREAS: the slow and graceful movements of Tai Chi relax and strengthen the body and mind, help to relieve stress, develop flexibility and coordination which is particularly beneficial to seniors and others in combating a variety of health conditions and disabilities; and
WHEREAS: the Taoist Tai Chi Society offers classes for beginners and continuing classes for adults, students and seniors and has volunteer instructors teaching in hospitals and nursing homes and to a wide variety of special needs groups; and
WHEREAS: members of the Taoist Tai Chi Society contribute many hours of service to our community, conducting fundraising campaigns and events that have benefitted many charitable organizations and other worthy causes.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim September 6, 2003 as "Taoist Tai Chi Awareness Day" in the City of Toronto to increase public awareness of the many health benefits derived from Taoist Tai Chi.
