| WHEREAS: |
the City's taxi drivers work numerous hours a week to provide safe and reliable transportation for our businesses, tourists and employees; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City did not declare a "Taxi Appreciation Day" for 2002; and |
| WHEREAS: |
taxi cab drivers have often not received sufficient public recognition in the past for their added value in keeping Toronto running smoothly; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City has been supportive in the past in recognizing the role of our cabbies through such programs as annual awards, the Ambassador program and the uniform cab-colour program, all to improve the value and performance of our cab companies; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Canyon Creek Chophouse has successfully set aside a special day to serve free lunches to taxi cab drivers for the last two years at its locations in Etobicoke and Mississauga; and |
| WHEREAS: |
employees at Canyon Creek's Front Street restaurant would like to hold the same event in appreciation of all taxi cab drivers for downtown Toronto. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 9, 2003 as "Taxi Driver Appreciation Day" and encourage taxi cab drivers in the downtown core to visit Canyon Creek's Front Street restaurant for a free lunch. |
