"Turkey Day"

November 23, 2003

WHEREAS: the holiday season is the time of year when we count our blessings. Among the many things we are most thankful for is that we live in the greatest and most caring City in the world and know we can count on the wonderful people of Toronto to help their neighbours in need; and
WHEREAS: for the past 16 years, Toronto's Goodwill Ambassador and legendary entrepreneur Honest Ed Mirvish and the Mirvish family, have shared the true meaning of the holidays by giving away free turkeys and Christmas cake. For many families and individuals, this tremendous charitable gesture is the only way they will be able to enjoy a traditional turkey dinner at Christmas time; and
WHEREAS: Ed Mirvish is a great humanitarian who is well-known and well-loved by the people of Toronto for his tremendous generosity. In turn, he shows his genuine love for our City and our residents through his support and outstanding contributions to the arts, those less fortunate and young people in our community; and
WHEREAS: during this very special time of year it is important for us to recognize the happiness and satisfaction that is derived from all acts of kindness, both large and small, that help make a difference in the lives of many people in our large and ethnically diverse City.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim November 23, 2003 as "Turkey Day" in the City of Toronto, and extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Honest Ed Mirvish, David Mirvish and their family for continuing this extremely generous holiday tradition.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
