"Walk to School Day"

October 8, 2003

WHEREAS: in the City of Toronto, across Canada and in cities around the world, the sixth annual "Walk to School Day" will be celebrated on October 8, 2003; and
WHEREAS: this international event will focus on the benefits of walking rather than driving to school, creating cleaner, safer and environmentally healthier neighbourhoods for our children; and
WHEREAS: this day is an opportunity for parents to spend more time with their children, reduce car use and traffic hazards, promote physical activity and contribute to a safer community.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 8, 2003 as "Walk to School Day" in the City of Toronto, and encourage all residents to participate in this very worthwhile event. I congratulate Greenest City and its funders, sponsors, partners and everyone involved for contributing to the success of Walk 2003.

[Signed Mayor Mel Lastman]
