"Youth Safety Week"

January 13 to 18, 2003

WHEREAS: the Youth Safety Sub-Committee and the Youth Gang Work Group are jointly hosting a symposium entitled "Common Cause: Youth Safety in the City"; and
WHEREAS: this symposium brings together local, national and international youth safety experts, police, youth, parents, service providers, policy makers and community members, who will examine the various aspects of youth safety including gang activity, bullying, school violence and racism; and
WHEREAS: this symposium is being held in response to growing public concern about youth crime and gang-related violence in our City, and provides an excellent opportunity to discuss common problems and develop community-based solutions; and
WHEREAS: with the recent series of killings and increased youth violence it is vital that every resident in all areas of the community take responsibility for making Toronto a safer place for young people.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim January 13 to 18, 2003 as "Youth Safety Week" in the City of Toronto, and encourage everyone to do their part to ensure the safety and well-being of our young people.
