 "Agnes Macphail Day"
March 24, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
in 1921, Agnes Macphail was the first woman elected to the Federal House of Commons, and in 1943 was elected to the provincial parliament from the riding of York East, thus becoming one of the first two women to be elected to the Ontario Legislature and the first to be seated; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Agnes Macphail advocated her sincere commitment to women's rights, fairness to seniors, penal and criminal justice system reform, international peace and disarmament, access to adequate housing, health care and education, and in living her beliefs, was a significant role model and outstanding contributor to national and local community life; and |
| WHEREAS: |
in 1994 the former Borough of East York began to recognize the contributions of this remarkable local resident, who began her career as a Grey County rural school teacher and became one of the most widely acknowledged and respected Canadian woman of her day; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the former Borough of East York community, through the annual Agnes Macphail Award, continues to honour her contributions to the role of women in Canadian politics and society and for her local and global achievements. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim March 24, 2004 as "Agnes Macphail Day" to celebrate her significant contributions and the 114th anniversary of her birth. |
