Proclamation
"Armenian Genocide Day"

April 25, 2004

WHEREAS: Canadian-Armenian communities across Canada will commemorate the 89th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, the first genocide of the 20th century; and
WHEREAS: the execution of the Armenian population in Ottoman Turkey claimed 1.5 million lives and culminated in one of the most brutal crimes in history; and
WHEREAS: by recognizing this tragic time in history, we are provided with an opportunity to understand and appreciate the values that Canadians deeply treasure - peace, freedom and democracy.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim April 25, 2004 as "Armenian Genocide Day" in the City of Toronto, to honour the memory of the men, women and children who died.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
