 "A Season for Nonviolence"

| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to confront the challenge of violence in the form of hate crimes, brutality, domestic abuse and other forms of inhumanity; and |
| WHEREAS: |
an awareness of nonviolent principles and practices is a powerful way to heal and transform our lives and communities, to recognize the dignity and worth of every human being, and to promote peace and harmony among all people regardless of race, colour, culture, class, language, faith, age, gender or sexual orientation; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the principals and practices of nonviolence were epitomized in the lives and work of two international leaders, Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi and Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.; and |
| WHEREAS: |
A Season for NonViolence will kick-off and culminate with observances at the United Nations in New York and in hundreds of cities around the globe, and groups world-wide will sponsor projects and programs to create greater awareness and consciousness of the principles and practices of nonviolence. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim "A Season for Nonviolence" in the City of Toronto, to recognize the tireless efforts and hard work of everyone involved with this citizens initiative, and encourage residents to support and participate in special events and other activities that are planned in their community. |
