Proclamation
"Breastfeeding Week"
October 1 - 7, 2004

WHEREAS: children are our most precious resource and it is our responsibility to care for and nurture them.
Breastfeeding is an important component of child health, contributing to their growth and psycho-social development.
Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life provides all the nutrition babies need to grow.
Mothers need the support of fathers, friends, health professionals and communities to initiate and sustain breastfeeding.
Canada will celebrate World Breastfeeding Week 2004 with the theme "Exclusive Breastfeeding: The Gold Standard - Safe, Sound and Sustainable".
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim October 1 - 7, 2004 as "Breastfeeding Week" and encourage all adults and children to participate in the events planned to celebrate the week.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
