"Community Gardening Day" October 1, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
community gardening brings people in communities together with a common goal of growing food, naturalizing green spaces and creating ornamental gardens. |
|
Community gardening can help foster social and environmental justice, eliminate hunger, break down racial and ethnic barriers, provide access to healthy and affordable food, promote and enhance education and help to create sustainable communities. |
|
The City of Toronto has a goal for establishing at least one community garden in each ward, and currently there are approximately 5,000 residents participating in community gardens. |
|
The American Community Gardening Association is holding its 25th anniversary conference in Toronto, bringing people from across Canada and around the world to share their experiences, learn from each other and explore the diversity of Toronto’s community gardens. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim October 1, 2004 as "Community Gardening Day" and encourage everyone to participate in this worthwhile endeavour and celebrate the many social and environmental benefits of community gardening.
|
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
