City of Toronto Proclamation |
| |
 "Community Safety Night"
May 19, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children (METRAC) and the City of Toronto's Task Force on Community Safety will be hosting the 5th annual Community Safety Night on May 19, 2004; and
| WHEREAS: |
this anti-violence event is based on the premise that when communities are safer for women who feel most vulnerable to public violence, they will be safer for everyone; and
| WHEREAS: |
in 1999 Toronto's Task Force on Community Safety recommended that Safety Audits be conducted in every community. This initiative provides an opportunity for Toronto residents to evaluate their neighbourhoods for safety, make important recommendations and work together to create safer communities; and
| WHEREAS: |
Safety Audits recognize that people experience violence differently based on identity including characteristics like ethnicity, race, age, language, income level, gender, sexuality and physical ability. They also understand that discrimination, stereotypes and negative biases against certain groups of people are also forms of violence; and
| WHEREAS: |
Community Safety Night encourages people in Toronto's diverse communities to voice their violence and discrimination concerns. Community groups will complete evaluations that will be sent to the City of Toronto Safety Audit Response System to ensure that community safety issues and concerns are directed to the appropriate department, Agency, Boards and Commissions for review and follow-up.
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim May 19, 2004 as "Community Safety Night", and encourage residents of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life to participate in this important event and become involved in creating safe neighbourhoods by preventing violence and discrimination across the City of Toronto.
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
