 "Day of Mourning"
April 28, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
this annual Day of Mourning commemorates the sacrifices made by workers who have been killed, injured or disabled on the job and their families; and |
| WHEREAS: |
last year, Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board reported that 359,353 workers suffered injuries and occupational diseases and another 552 died, two thirds of whom suffered a fatal disease; and |
| WHEREAS: |
statistics concerning workplace deaths and injuries are alarming, but the human cost is harder to bear and unfortunately, deaths are increasing and hundreds of people in Ontario have been injured on the job; and |
| WHEREAS: |
this annual Day of Mourning is an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the goal of making our workplace safer which we can only achieve by working together. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim April 28, 2004 as a "Day of Mourning" in the City of Toronto, to remember those workers who have been killed, injured or disabled at their place of work. |
